AIF & PMS: Portfolio Management Services for the Serious Investor
Once a portfolio grows beyond a certain size, mutual funds alone often stop being enough. Portfolio Management Services (PMS) and Alternative Investment Funds (AIF) give high-net-worth investors access to concentrated, actively managed strategies that are built around individual stock or asset selection, rather than a pooled, one-size-fits-all scheme. At GRM Wealth, we help you navigate portfolio management services in India with access to some of the country's most established fund managers.
What Is PMS (Portfolio Management Services)?
In a PMS, you own the underlying securities directly in your own demat account, rather than units of a pooled fund. A professional portfolio manager builds and manages a concentrated portfolio — often 15 to 30 stocks — matched to a defined strategy, such as large-cap growth, mid-cap value or a special-situations approach. This direct ownership brings more transparency and more customisation than a mutual fund, along with higher minimum investment requirements set by SEBI.
What Is an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)?
An AIF is a privately pooled investment vehicle regulated by SEBI, structured into three categories:
funds investing in start-ups, SMEs and infrastructure, often with positive economic or social impact.
funds such as private equity and debt funds that do not use significant leverage.
funds using complex or leveraged trading strategies, including long-short equity funds.
AIFs give fund managers flexibility that mutual funds and PMS do not have, including the ability to invest in unlisted securities and use derivatives more freely, within SEBI's regulatory framework.
AIF vs PMS: Key Differences
Structure
PMS holds securities directly in your name; an AIF pools investor money into a single fund structure.
Minimum investment
both carry SEBI-prescribed minimums, which are typically higher for Category III AIFs than for PMS.
Strategy
PMS is usually long-only equity; AIFs, particularly Category III, can use hedging, derivatives and leverage.
Taxation
PMS gains are taxed in the investor's own hands as capital gains; AIF taxation varies by category and should be reviewed with your tax advisor.
Transparency
PMS investors can see every holding in their own account; AIF investors typically receive periodic fund-level disclosures.
Who Should Consider PMS and AIF?
PMS and AIF are designed for investors who already have a diversified core portfolio and are looking to allocate a portion of their wealth to higher-conviction, professionally managed strategies. They typically suit investors with a longer investment horizon, a higher risk appetite, and the ability to meet SEBI's minimum investment thresholds for these categories.

Key risks — read before enquiring
- AIFs are not for retail investors. Minimum commitment is ₹1 crore (₹1.5 Cr for some funds) as per SEBI Category II / III norms.
- They carry illiquidity risk — your capital is locked for the fund tenure (typically 5–10 years). There is no guaranteed exit before maturity.
- All return figures (IRR, MOIC, distribution yield) are indicative and not guaranteed. Past performance of prior series is not a promise of future results.
- Private equity and growth equity strategies carry concentration, execution and valuation risk. You can lose some or all of your investment.
- Category III AIF returns are market-linked — capital is not protected.

Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) are high-risk, illiquid instruments regulated by SEBI under the AIF Regulations, 2012. They are not suitable for retail investors. All IRR, MOIC, distribution and return figures sourced from the Nuvama Fortnightly Partners Dashboard (June 2026) are indicative and not guaranteed — actual returns depend on market conditions, fund deployment and exit realisations.
